Born Jan. 1, 1942, in Macomb, Ill., he was the son of Donald W. and J. Irene "Pug" VanVelsor Baker. He was raised by his mother and Gerald Preble. He married Kathleen Hickerson. He later married Jeanette Sue Mundy Friend.
Mr. Baker lived near Oquawka the past 11 years and prior to that lived west of Abingdon in Warren County. He attended Abingdon Schools. He retired from the Maytag Corporation after 30 years in the maintenance department. He served in the Army.
His hobbies included flat track motorcycle racing in his younger days, hunting, fishing, eagle watching near the Mississippi River, watching local dirt track car races, and going to the Sturgis Rally, which he attended the past three years.
Survivors include two sons; Jerry Baker of Avon, Ill., and Donald Baker Jr. of Galesburg, Ill.; three grandchildren; two brothers, Kendall Furniss of Media, Ill., and Ronald Wayne Baker of Oquawka; stepchildren, Debbie Tabb, Bill Friend, Bob Friend and Dave Friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, one son and one brother.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson West Abington Chapel.
The Funeral for Mr. Baker will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Burial will be in Avon Cemetery.
