Gospel singer. Lead singer of the legendary Swanee Quintet Gospel group.
The long-time lead tenor was known for his vocal talent which mirrored that of Sam Cooke. Jones singing career spanned in both the sacred and the secular arenas since his teen years - from Gospel groups such as the Daggert boys, Southern Six and Singing Sons to touring with rock legends The Drifters. After a brief but unsuccessful stint replacing Sam Cooke in the Soul Stirrers Gospel group, Jones joined the Swanees in summer of 1957.
Memorable Swanee Quintet tracks led by Jones include "When I'm Serving the Lord, God Is So Wonderful, Send It On Down, There Is No Man Greater Than God, Jesus Will Fix Things Alright, I Believe That He Will, and By And By."
Little Johnny Jones left the Swanees years later to pursue a career as a solo Gospel star. Some of his solo projects include "Lets Go Back to God" released in 1996, before "crossing over" to cut one rhythm & blues single for Fury. He ultimately returned to the Swanees for the LP "From Augusta with Love."
Formed in 1939, the Swanee Quintet is one of the oldest a active groups in Gospel music. For almost seven decades, the Swanees have performed in almost every state including Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, Harlem's Apollo Theater, and The House of Blues.
Their career took a major turn by chance of meeting and helping out a little boy shining shoes in front of an Augusta radio station where the Quintet had their afternoon radio program. The shoeshine boy was the future Godfather of Soul James Brown, who years later hired the Swanee Quintet to open his sold-out shows throughout the U.S. and Europe performing before thousands of people. Together, they penned a 1966 mega hit "Try Me Father" (a melody spinoff of Brown's classic hit "Try Me").
Well known songs of the Swanee Quintet include "How Much Do I Owe Him, What About Me, Strong Determination, Ups and Downs, Doctor Jesus, Sit Down Servant, Dying Bed, Eternal Life, Just One Rose, and So Glad."
