*Widowed, she died at her residence on West 41st Avenue in Vancouver at the age of 81 years. She'd lived in British Columbia for the last 64 years of her life.
*Daughter of lawyer Charles Hibbert and Janet (née MacDonald) Tupper [the couple married in 1879 in Halifax, Nova Scotia]; wife of the late Captain Cecil Mack Merritt, who served during the First World War with the Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment) and lost his life on service in Belgium on 23 April 1915; Cecil and Sophie had married in Vancouver on 4 Dec 1905.
*Her son, Charles Cecil Ingersoll Merritt of Connaught Drive in Vancouver, was the informant. Sophie Almon Merritt was laid to rest on 5 March 1964 in the Ocean View Cemetery in Burnaby.

Sophie Almon Tupper was born on 16 May 1882, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. On 4 Dec 1905 in Vancouver, she married Cecil Mack Merritt, a merchant and broker; he was born in St. Catharines, Ontario, on 6 Jan 1877, the son of William Ingersoll Merritt and Mary Beatrice (née Adams) Merritt.
Cecil and Sophie lived at 975 Park Road (later Lagoon Drive) from 1905 to 1913.
When the First World War began in 1914, Cecil enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served in Europe. On 22 Apr 1915, he was wounded in the leg during the Second Battle of Ypres. The next morning he was killed while encouraging his men during a counter-attack against the German forces. He was memorialized in the Menin Gate (Ypres) Memorial in Belgium.
Sophie never re-married. She died on 3 March 1964 in Vancouver.

She and Cecil had 3 children: Beatrice Ormond (Merritt) NacMillan, Charles Cecil Ingersoll Merritt and Francis William ('Bill') Ingersoll Merritt.
