Edward was the son of Edward Michael (1891-1965) and Anna A. (Dwyer) Kane (1896-1989).
According to an application for a grave marker for him, he was Inducted into the US Military on 19 July 1945, honorably discharged on 24 January 1946. He enlisted on 25 January 1946 and was honorably discharged on 7 March 1947. His service Troop was the 14th Constabulary Regiment, A/S INF. His rank was Corporal and he served in Germany where the Constabulary was created to provide a post war police force for the extended occupation of the US Zone.
