Stationed at the small native village at Chichagof Harbor on Attu Island, the westernmost island in the Aleutian Islands, Territory of Alaska, as a schoolteacher and nurse when the Japanese landed in early June 1942. They executed her husband Charles, a radio operator also employed by the BIA, because he wouldn't repair an amateur radio they wanted to use. Etta was held as a Prisoner of War (POW) at several POW Camps in Japan until the end of World War II in Sep 1945.
