From "The Charlevoix Sentinel" of Charlevoix, Michigan, August 5, 1896:

"Died, on Sunday last, at his home in Marion, Benjamin Rice, after a protracted illness. Mr. Rice was one of the earliest settlers of this region. As a boy he lived on Beaver Island during the Mormon occupancy and troubles*, removing to St. Clair County with his parents after the evacuation. In 1866 he located on the farm in Marion, where he lived continuously up to the day of his death."
