WATSONTOWN - Robert R. “Bif” King, 82, of 1039 Elm St. died Friday evening, Nov. 20, 1992, in Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor (Hefty) King, who died in 1972 after 35 years of marriage. Mr. King was born in Summit Hill, Carbon County, on Sept. 14, 1910, a son of the late James Frank and Nancy Ross King.
He was a graduate of Summit Hill High school in 1929 and also a graduate of Muhlenburg College where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He received his master’s degree in education from New York University and did post graduate studies at Bucknell University, Lewisburg.
He was a public school teacher for 40 years, retiring from Warrior Run School District as head of the science department. He earlier taught in the Summit Hill public schools. As a boy, he had worked in the coal mines near his home as a mule-team driver.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving aboard the U.S.S. Des Moines in the Atlantic campaign. He retired from the U.S. Reserve with the rank of captain. King had a total of 27 years of active duty in the U.S.Navy and U.S. Naval Reserves. He was commander of Williamsport Naval Reserve Center and earlier the commander of Hazelton Naval Reserve Center.
He was a member of Watsontown First United Presbyterian Church, where he had served as Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir. He was also a lay speaker.
He was a member of the U. S. Navy Retired Officer Association, the Clyde F. More American Legion Post of Watsontown, the National Teachers’ Association, the AARP, the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and was a former member of the Watsontown Lions Club.
He is survived by two daughters, Nancy King Fisher of Watsontown and Roberta L. Revert of Watsontown RD2; a son, John G. King of Deep Gap, N.C.; 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; and a brother, George G. King of Eugene, Ore. He was preceded in death by a sister, Isabell Crawford.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the First Presbyterian Church, Watsontown, by the Rev. Paul Bench. Burial will follow in Watsontown Cemetery. Watsontown and Turbotville veterans organizations will conduct graveside military honors. Visitors may call from 7 p.lm. To 9 p.m. Monday at Cronrath Funeral Home. 308 Main St., or at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday.
