U.S. Veteran
Allen W. Affolter, age 89, of New Ulm, died peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, June 6, 2019, at the Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Pastor Rob Guenther will officiate, and burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery-Soldier’s Rest Section. Full military honors will be conducted by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 4-7 pm on Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home-South Chapel and continue from 10-11 am on Wednesday at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Allen is survived by his daughters, Susan (Brent) Carlson of Duluth, Julie (Ray) Thompson of Sartell, and Nancy (Barry) Vogel of Chanhassen; a son, David Affolter of Minturn, Colorado; brother, Dr. LeRoy Affolter of Marshall; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three bonus great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother in infancy, Raymond; and his sister-in-law, Carol Affolter.
Allen Wayne Affolter was born on March 1, 1930 in Mankato to John & Josephine (Huss) Affolter. He was a 1948 graduate from Mankato High School. He attained his degree in Mathematics from the Mankato Teachers College, and later received his certification in insurance sales from the American College of Life Underwriters. He proudly served his country from 1952-1954 in the U.S. Marine Corps serving during the time of the Korean War. On May 1, 1955, Allen was united in marriage to Beverly Ann Berry in Marshall. This union blessed the couple with three daughters and a son whom together they raised in New Ulm where Allen worked as a Bank Examiner and also in Life Insurance Sales and administration. Besides his work, there were a variety of hobbies that Allen enjoyed in life. Allen dearly enjoyed spending time out on the golf courses since learning the game as a caddy at age 10. He even served as the captain of his college golf team. When he wasn’t golfing, Allen enjoyed spending time in the outdoors on family camping trips or fishing. As a proud member of the service, Allen was a Life Member of the U.S. Marine Corps League, the Korean War Veterans Association, the VFW, American Legion, and the DAV. He was also a lifetime member of the New Ulm Country Club, St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, and member and supporter of Turner Hall. There were many accomplishments in his life that Allen was proud of, but he was truly most proud of his family. Many cherished memories will forever stay in the hearts of all who knew him best. Blessed be those memories.
