In 1901 Etta's husband was involved in a family dispute over crops. The dispute turned violent and two relatives were shot and killed. Etta was removed from the situation and stayed with her father. George Boulton was arrested as an accessory to the murders and in 1906 found guilty.

Her grandson, Jacque S. Boulton (he was the son of Howard H. Boulton) died in 1942 while serving in the Philippines. He died while being held as a Prisoner of War. (1920-1942).
