The suspect was hiding in the bushes nearby and immediately opened fire upon the Officers, three times with a shotgun. He struck Officer Hill in the head. Other Officers responded to a call of "Officer Down." There was another ongoing shootout, another Officer was wounded. The suspect was shot and killed. Officer Hill was survived by his wife, two young children, and his parents. His father, Earl Hill, was a Sergeant in the Des Moines Police Department, but retired shortly after his son's death.
