When he was 14 he altered his birth certificate to show that he was of age.

On September 18, 1968 he enlisted in the Marines, he was 14 years old.

He was killed in action on July 7, 1969 while making an ammunition run to supply his comrades. He was just 15 years old that day ..

PFC Dan Bullock, PFC Donald W. Bunn, LCPL Larry J. Eglinsdoerfer, PFC Jason D. Hunnicutt and PFC Steven Montgomery were members of F Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, stationed at An Hoa Combat Base in Quang Nam Province, RVN. On the night of June 7, 1969, after a mortar barrage, NVA sappers attacked the base and were able to break through the perimeter at two positions. Bullock, Bunn, Eglinsdoefer, and Hunnicutt were in a bunker when satchel charges were tossed on and into the bunker. The enemy were able to infiltrate at that position, passing over the bunker and firing inside as they went past. None of the Marines were able to exit the bunker and all were killed. Montgomery was on the perimeter during the attack and died after being hit by small arms fire. The NVA attack was eventually repulsed, the enemy leaving behind 19 dead. The next morning, Marines removed the bodies of their dead comrades from the bunker. Bullock was only 15 years old when he was killed, the youngest American to die in the war.
