It is with immense sadness that we inform SN&R readers that our respected and beloved colleague Ralph Brave passed away last Saturday of advanced stage lung cancer at the UC Davis Medical Center. Ralph is survived by his longtime girlfriend, Kathi Sylva, and his sister, Carol Brave.
To say that Ralph wrote crucial stories, shook the halls of power and touched the lives of many over the course of his long years as a journalist and at SN&R is an understatement. We will remember him for his brilliance and intensity, his commitment to working for a better world and his depth of heart.
In October of 2008, Ralph was posthumously awarded a First Place award from the California Newspaper Publishers Association for his story "Smoked Out!" about UC Davis' secret research ties to the tobacco industry.
