Services for Elizabeth "Betty" Anderson Hagerman Taylor of Alturas, will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, March 11 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on East 13th Street, Alturas.

Mrs. Taylor, a resident of Modoc Medical Center Skilled Nursing facility for several years, passed away Monday, March 8, 1999 in Alturas, California, just two days shy of her 94th birthday.

Born Elizabeth Anderson on March 10, 1905 in Cadiz, Indiana to parents of English and Irish descent, she was in her infancy when her mother died and was reared by her maternal grandmother. She attended schools in New Castle, Indiana. At 17, she married John Marion Hagerman. They had three children, Pearl, John Jr. and Everett.

When the Great Depression hit in 1929, the family moved to California where John, Sr. had the promise of a job in the copper mines in northern California. The family stayed in Berkeley for a short time and then moved to Alturas where they settled for 10 years. While in Alturas, Elizabeth and John operated a bakery from their home and delivered baked goods throughout Alturas. When World War II hit, the family moved to Los Angeles where the two worked at North American Aviation. Elizabeth was the sole woman at North American who had earned an "A" mechanics rating, an accomplishment for any woman in that era. She retired from the company after some 20 years.

The Hagermans divorced in 1947, and Elizabeth married Maurice A. Taylor on July 6, 1951 in Los Angeles. They remained together until his death in 1973. She sold her home in Redondo Beach and moved back in 1974, to where her best years were spent -- in Alturas and where her son John Jr. also had remained.

Mrs. Taylor was a resourceful person who led a full and active life. She was known for being an excellent seam stress. She enjoyed gardening and her favorite past time was fishing.

She was preceded in death in August 1997 by her son John J. Hagerman, Mayor of Alturas.

Mrs. Taylor is survived by her son Everett Hagerman of Boulder City, Nevada; daughter Edith Minard, Long Beach, California; six grandchildren; one step-grandchild;14 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

Burial will be at the Alturas Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Latter-day Saints Relief Society of Alturas or a charity of choice.
