"Oss" Smith was born to James Macon Smith (1853-1897) and Mary Jane Scott Smith (1852-1932) in rural Yell County, Arkansas. Many records list his name as Oscar. However, one of my aunts visited with one of his sisters many years ago. This sister insisted that his name was actually Ossland and not Oscar. He was always called Oss. His siblings were James Augustus Smith (1878-1940), Louisa Inis "Wannie" Smith Raney (1880-1962), Cora Jane Smith Holt (1882-1964), John Herbert "Hub" Smith (1890-1927), Walter Clay Smith (1893-1970), Polly L "Pally" Smith Davis (1896-1913, and China S. Smith (1897-1910).

He married first Mabel (maiden name unknown) who was born about 1892 in Arkansas. He was enumerated with her and their daughter Ruth, age 8 months in the 1910 census. They lived on the Lower Petit Jean River Road in the Wilson Community in Yell County, Arkansas. His occupation was listed as farmer, he rented his home, and he could read and write. His brother Walter is also in their household and they are next door to his widowed mother, with Herbert, and "Pallie" in that household. This researcher has no further information about Mabel Smith or their daughter Ruth. It is presumed that they died prior to 1913 when he married Ida Mae Guest.

He married Ida Mae Guest in Yell County in 1913. Their first child, Wannie Jane "Juanita" Smith was born April 7, 1914 in Yell County. Their second child, Bonnie Estell, was born May 13, 1916, in the Ranger Community of Yell County. He had died of typhoid fever complicated by pneumonia just a month before, on April 13, 1916. His death certificate was not filed until 1924 and lists his burial location as New Hope Cemetery in Dardanelle, Arkansas.
