Obituary West Carolina Record, Rutherfordton, North Carolina June 28, 1873
OBITUARY
Died in Rutherford Co., N. C. June 10th, 1873, Mrs. Jane Eaves, wife of Spencer Eaves, in her sixtieth year. Sister Eaves joined the M. E. Church at the early age of thirteen years was happily and powerfully converted about the same time. She was a devoted member for forty-six years. She loved her Church and feared not to defend it. Strong and unfaltering faith in the great Redeemer reproved sin where ever she found it; truly she possessed more than ordinary faith in Jesus her great leader. Great is the loss to the Church and her family, but their loss is her eternal gain. Her afflictions was long and painful, in this she murmured not, nor did her faith fail her, being anchored upon the Rock of ages, both sure and steadfast and immovable, her way seemed to be always entirely clear during her last illness, exhorting those of her neighbors and all who visited her to meet her in Heaven.
She said to the writer a few days before her departure: “I have been afraid of the River, but that is about all gone now; do you think I am too sure? I feel entirely sure of the kingdom, I am a sinner saved by grace.”
A few days before her departure she called her children and husband to her bed-side and said to them, all being present:
“My dear Children: I have been and am yet passing through sore afflictions. I feel that I am passing over the River of Death, and at times I feel like sinking, but I look forward and cast my eyes on Jesus, and He reaches out His arm and bears me up, and I trust He will carry me safely over. I look beyond the Jordan of Death, and I imagine I see my dear Mother, and my two children Pent and little Willie, looking over the battlements of Heaven, ready to welcome me. When I shall be carried by angels to the place prepared for me; and if such a thing can be I will send my spirit back to enlighten your pathway to our Father’s House. It won’t be long until I see one of you coming, and then another until we all get there; but you Tommy, my youngest child, you have deep waters to pass through, and temptations to surmount, but put your trust in Jesus, and He will carry you over safe, and the angels will meet you, and with their snow white wings will carry you up and land you safely where there will be no more parting, and where I trust we will be an undivided family to part no more forever.”
Thus died a true friend of the Church a kind neighbor an affectionate wife and mother. May her friends and relatives, husband and children, all follow Jesus as she followed Him and may their last days be as her last days full of the hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord.
“Lo, the prisoner is released,
Lightened of her fleshly load,
Where the weary are at rest,
She is gathered into God.

Lo, the pain of life is past,
All her warfare now is o’er,
Death and hell behind are cast,
Grief and suffering are no more.
