Mrs. Sue Cornwell Smith age 89 of the Pleasant Shade Community died at the Riverview Regional Medical Center in Carthage at 10:20 a.m. Wednesday morning June 19, 2019 where she was admitted Saturday afternoon June 15th following a fall which resulted in a fractured hip.
Eld. James “Pee Wee” Massey and Eld. Junior Dickerson officiated at the 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon June 22nd funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Garden of Everlasting Life at Smith County Memorial Gardens.
The daughter of the late Robert Lee Cornwell who died at the age of 67 on October 16, 1973 and Mable Laura Gregory Cornwell who died at the age of 75 on July 4, 1975, she was one of three children and was born Sally Sue Cornwell in the Cato Community on July 30, 1929.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Nora Marie Cornwell Anthony who died May 31, 2010 at the age of 82 and by a brother Kenneth Allen Cornwell who died May 17, 2013 at the age of 81.
In Rossville, Georgia on Saturday December 11, 1948 she was united in marriage to Pleasant Shade Community native Georgia Kindred Smith who died September 1, 2007 at the age of 80.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in the Sycamore Valley Community.
She was a 1948 graduate of the Trousdale County High School.
Mrs. Smith was employed at the former Carthage Shirt Corporation for over thirty seven years before her retirement in 1993.
Survivors include her daughter Brenda Kay Smith Dillard and husband Gary of the Pleasant Shade Community; two grandsons, Joey Dillard and wife Maggie Law Dillard also of the Pleasant Shade Community; Josh Dillard and wife Hope Givens Dillard of the Buffalo Community; five great-grandchildren, Alexis, Caroline, Cason, Tucker and Sawyer Dillard.
