George Poe was the second son of John Poe and Jane McBride. He was born in Dring, Ireland July 31, 1744 and was baptized at Croghan Presbyterian Church, near the town of Killeshandra, about 3 miles from Dring.

In 1748, Jane and John Poe along with children, David, George and a daughter, immigrated to America. They landed at New Castle, Delaware and immediately traveled to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, settling near John's brother, Alexander Poe. There, the family engaged in farming on leased land.

There is a gap in George's family record at this point in time. Apparently the family moved to Cecil County, MD at some point where in 1773, George Poe married Catherine Dawson whose family also emigrated from Ireland. They soon moved to Baltimore and lived first on Thomas Street in Fells Point. At that time, Fells Point was a landing place for large sea vessels and one of the biggest ports of the east coast at the time.

In the Revolutionary War, George Poe's military record shows that he was a private in Captain Case's Company in Baltimore, on duty 1775-1776. David Poe, his brother, was a sergeant in the same company. Later in Captain McClellan's Company, George Poe is listed as a Sergeant. On June 11, 1776, George Poe was commissioned Captain in the Thirty-fourth Battalion, Militia of Frederick County, Maryland. It is unknown if he was actually living in Frederick County at this time, but Militia are typically made up of local residents. So, it is highly probable that he and perhaps his son Jacob, leased land together as early as 1776.

George Poe and wife Catherine Dawson had 4 children. Jacob, born in Baltimore October 10,1775 married Bridget Amelia Fitzgerald Kennedy, and died in 1860. Bridget was born in Ireland June 10, 1775. Jacob and Bridget are buried beside George Poe in the Israel's Creek Meeting House Cemetery. His second son, George Poe (Jr) was born in 1778 and died in 1864 – burial unknown. Harriett Poe was born in 1785 and died in 1816 – burial unknown. Another son, Stephen Poe died in infancy.

We do know that George Poe, son Jacob and Jacob's wife Bridget, lived in Frederick County in 1816. They acquired 135 acres of the farm Urania's Dwelling on the east bank of Monocacy River at Link's Bridge in from James and Sarah Henderson with a mortgage for $7,629.

George and Jacob had financial difficulties. In 1819, Jacob had to borrow $2,200 from his successful brother George Jr., a banker in Pittsburgh, PA in order to keep Urania's Dwelling. And in 1821, court records show that George Poe was living in Frederick Co. since he sold a slave named Mary, age 34, and her son Lloyd of two years to William Randall for $200.

George died at the home of his son Jacob, at what is recorded as "Elmwood," Frederick County, Maryland on August 20, 1823, age 83. Land records do not indicate that their farm, Urania's Dwelling was renamed Elmwood, but it is assumed to be so since no other land purchase or sale was recorded. George Poe is buried at what is known as Israel's Creek Meeting House Cemetery, in Walkersville, Frederick County, Maryland. His grave along with that of son Jacob and wife Bridget originally were not marked with the present marble grave covers. Neilson Poe, the eldest son of Jacob and Bridget, installed those covers. The cover inscription for George Poe reads, "In memory of George Poe, who departed this life at the residence of his son, in this county on the 25th of August 1823 at the venerable age of 83 years. In remembrance of his virtues, his children have erected this marble."

George Poe's wife, Catherine Dawson, born in Cecil County, Maryland in 1742, was first buried in Havre-de Grace in 1806 before George and son Jacob settled on their farm in Frederick County. Catherine is now buried in lot 129, Westminster Churchyard, Baltimore, Maryland, near the grave of Major (appointed an honorary General by the Marquis de Lafayette) David Poe, George's brother.

The Poe family line from which George Poe and brother David Poe descend requires some explanation since this line is so widely celebrated in Maryland history. David Poe ascended to the rank of General under George Washington in the Continental Army and served as the Deputy Quartermaster in Baltimore during the Revolutionary War. He was a close friend of General Washington and of the Marquis de Lafayette who paid special tribute to him during his tour of America in 1824. Edgar Allen Poe's history is well known in the literary field and was a resident of Baltimore at the time of his death. George Poe was Edgar Allen Poe's Great Uncle and General David Poe was Edgar Allen Poe's Grandfather.
