Stanley Curtis Bierly Sr., 83, of Center hall RD 2 and Fort Myers, Florida, died at home in Centre hall Tuesday, May 5, 1992.
He was the founder, and for many years, owner of the Millheim plumbing, heating, cooling and electrical contracting firm that beared his name. He founded the business as a young man living in Rebersburg and in 1934 moved to Millheim. His son, S. Curtis Bierly Jr., owned and operated the business since 1975.
He was an electrical engineering graduate of Penn State. He pioneered the sale of many new items in the Millheim area, among them automobile radios, automatic washing machines, television and home electric heat.
He served for many years as a director of the Rebersburg National Bank and later served on the regional board of Peoples National Bank of Central; Pennsylvania.
He was a 32nd degree Mason and was past master of Old Fort Lodge 537. He was also a member of the Williamsport Scottish Rite and the Jaffa Shrine of Altoona. He was past president of the Centre County Scottish Rite Club and Shrine Club.
For more than 50 years he was a member of Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Millheim, and for 48 years he was a member of the Nittany Country Club. He was a charter member of the Millheim Lion’s Club and a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association.
He played baseball in Centre County for many years and was a member of the Old Timers Baseball Hall of Fame.
He was born in Dents Run Elk County, October 4, 1908, a son of Curtis M. and Mayme Wolfe Basom Bierly. On June 13, 1934, he married Phyllis Wagner, who survived.
He was also survived by two sons, S. Curtis Jr, of Centre Hall and Herbert E. of Wellsville; two sisters: Edyth I. Kreamer of Annville and Ruthe M. Gray of Bellefonte; two brothers, Eugene T. of Plymouth Meeting and Woodrow W. of State College.
Services were held at Saint John’s Lutheran Church, Millheim, with the Reverend M. Gregory officiating.
Burial was at Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery, Rebersburg.
