ELIZABETH SARAH ATKINS, 23, of Cambridge, died Monday, Nov. 19th, 2007. The beloved daughter of Elisha (Skip) Atkins & Maureen Colton, sister of Kirsten Colton & Siobhan Atkins of Cambridge, & granddaughter of Elizabeth Atkins of Belmont and Catherine McIntyre of NH, Liz was a joy to all around her. Despite a brain tumor at age 2, Liz overcame her deficits to become an honor student, avid reader, and human-rights advocate, graduating from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in 2003. Encouraged by an elementary school teacher, Liz joined Boston Children's Theatre and used her acting skills and lovely voice in many productions -- memorable roles included Fern in Charlotte's Web and The Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz. When she developed a new brain cancer in her junior year at Sarah Lawrence College, she underwent difficult treatment without complaint, and decided to live fully, the day after her diagnosis ordering furniture for the bookstore that was her dream, and traveling to Ireland with family & friends. She insisted upon continuing her studies and, with the support of her medical team at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the faculty & disabilities services at Sarah Lawrence, & legions of family & friends, was able to graduate with her class, to a standing ovation, this past spring. Liz will be remembered by countless family members and friends for her courage, grace, sense of humor, & serenity despite adversity. Visiting hours will be held at Keefe Funeral Home, 2175 Mass. Ave., NORTH CAMBRIDGE this Friday, November 23rd, from 5-8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held this Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. John's Church, Cambridge. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Boston Children's Theatre, 321 Columbus Ave, Boston, MA, 02116 or the Brain Cancer Research Fund, c/o Dr Patrick Wen, DFCI, 44 Binney St, Boston, 02115.
