John Arthur is the son of Arthur and Bridget O'Hare McGann. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts and is the brother of Owen E. McGann and sister, Mary, who died as an infant in Boston and is buried with their father, Arthur. Arthur died in Boston in 1856. John's mother moved the family to Ohio, Bureau, Illinois to be near her brothers, Patrick and Thomas. Bridget subsequently married John Burns by whom she had 5 other children: Hugh, Anna Burns (James) Enright, Julia Marie Burns, Bridget Burns ( Louis Charles) Knuth, and Catherine Burns (Thomas) Moore. John married Margaret Enright. The couple settled in Sterling, Illinois where they raised six children.
