David Walter Schreck, Commander United States Navy (retired) passed away in Poway CA, on 6/25/19. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Grace Walker-Schreck. David was born 8/1/1948 to Charles and Mary Schreck in San Diego, California. David was a Kearny High graduate, later enlisted in the Navy in 1968. David earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of New Mexico in 1973 and was commissioned as an officer aboard submarines. He served on USS Salmon, USS Wahoo and rose through the ranks to become Commanding Officer of the USS Dolphin submarine, Commanded Submarine Development Group 1 Ballast Point and later executive officer of the USS Whidbey Island during Operation Desert Storm. David taught at the war college Quantico Virginia prior to retirement. He received a Master’s Degree and taught school in Rhode Island. Mary and David married and resided in Poway CA. David worked in Rancho Bernardo for Cymer Corporation then Northrop Grumman and help start ELRC, a laser chamber remanufacturing facility in Escondido. David was a member of San Diego Lodge #35, San Diego Sottish Rite, Al Bahr Shrine and San Diego Chapter No. 45 National Sojourners. David had a passion for electronics and Ham Radio. He was a member of Poway Ham Radio Club and enjoyed the involvement and weekly breakfasts with his friends. David also enjoyed the weekly lunches, conversations and stories with his friends from Northrop Grumman.
David is survived by brother Dan Schreck, nephews Brad Schreck and Charlie Schreck, sister Jeannie Woodstrup, sons Dustin Trukken and Harry Ferrari.
Full Military Honors will be conducted Thursday July 25th at 10 a.m. internment private, at Miramar National Cemetery 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, CA 92122. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Al Bahr Shrine transportation fund for burned and crippled children.
