Child of John Thone (1856-1945) and Vicktoria Buhr (1857-1908), born in Austria. The family immigrated to the US in 1892. Joseph was studying to be a doctor while living in Columbus, Ohio. He married Rosalind Wilson in 1907 in Columbus, OH. Joseph then married Ruth C McKinstry on 31 Jul 1916 in Cleveland, Ohio. Joseph and Ruth moved to Los Angeles after 1942.
