He was a veteran of World War II, having served in Europe with the 4134th Quartermaster Service Co. He was a member of William P. Larkin Post No. 112, American Legion. Surviving are his wife, sons Preston, Jr., and Richard Lee Byrd; his mother, Mrs. Odessa [sic, Madessia "Dessie"Oram] Byrd, Philadelphia; an aunt, Mrs. Ruth Franklin, of Martinsburg, W. Va., and uncle, Edward Oram, Baltimore.
