Lee Ellen Gemoets has passed away in her home in Las Cruces at age 64. Lee was born in El Paso, TX on October 16, 1946 and was a long time resident of Las Cruces and New Mexico.

She graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1964 and later earned a Bachelor's Degree in Literature and a Master's Degree in Education from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. During her years at NMSU, she enjoyed producing and participating in drama and always loved writing. She frequently contributed to New Mexico Magazine and worked as a business editor for Las Cruces Sun News. She also worked as an aid to Senator Jeff Bingaman and worked as a teacher for Las Cruces Public Schools. Her artistic hobbies and projects were numerous and expertly done. She enjoyed sewing and was an accomplished seamstress. She particularly excelled at making beautiful and artistic quilts. An avid reader, Lee was very knowledgeable about literature and loved nature. In her later years, she enjoyed visiting her great nieces and nephews and introduced them to the world of art.

She is predeceased by her parents, Martin and Doris Gemoets of Las Cruces, and her son, Alex Schupert, also of Las Cruces. She is survived by her brother John Gemoets, of Brazito, John's children Mark and Chris, and four great nieces and nephews, Martin, Mariana, Mercedes, and Carmen. There are also numerous relatives in the Las Cruces and El Paso area.
