Mary Fannie Dillard was born near Goodwater, Alabama on March 9, 1913 the first of six children born to Henrietta Phillips Dillard and Daniel Dougal Dillard. The family moved West when Mary was three months old and made their home in Concrete, WA, where her father was the first mayor and owned the Baker River Lumber Company.

She was raised and schooled at Concrete and graduated from Concrete High School in 1932. That same year both parents died leaving Mary to rear her five younger siblings during the depression. When the youngest was ready for college, the family moved to Seattle where they all had a chance for a college education.

Upon receiving her degree from the University of Washington in 1942 with graduate studies in Sociology and Anthropology, she entered the University of Washington Graduate School program in Social Work for a year. She took a job as a social worker in King County Welfare in the Seattle area. Feeling this was not the job for her, she enrolled at Prairie Bible Institute, Three Hills, Alberta, Canada. When graduated, she became a Missionary. Through Oriental Boat Mission, she lived on a boat in Canton, China and ministered there until expelled by the Communist Revolution in 1949. After the war, she moved her mission work to Japan where she was a missionary for 30 years. She was a resident of the Wenatchee area since 1981. Mary attended First Baptist Church in Wenatchee. She received support from the Community Bible Church in Concrete. Mary's brother Cecil (Joyce) Dillard lives in Mount Vernon. She had numerous nephews and nieces including, Susan North of Wenatchee and Linda Middlebrooks of Renton. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Dan Dillard, one sister, Lillie Brown (Wenatchee), and sister, June Wadsworth died four days after Mary's death.
