Thurman "Bill" Stone, 87, of Dickens, died Saturday June 23, 2007, in Spur.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Spur with Rev. Ron Meador and Jamie Braly officiating. Burial will be in Dickens Cemetery under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home of Spur.

Bill was a cowboy and rancher, but also served in law enforcement in Archer, Knox, and Dickens counties .

Survivors include his wife, Velma of Dickens; one daughter, Mary Rose of Albany, Texas; two brothers, H.D. Stone of Yukon, Okla., and O.P. Stone of Weatherford, Texas; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Thurman 'Bill' Venoy Stone is my uncle. He was born in Round Timbers, Baylor County, Texas on 2 MAR 1920. He died in Spur, Texas on 23 JUN 2007. His parents were Emery 'Bummy' Ellsworth Stone and Omega Thurman. He was called 'Bill' his whole life, except his mother called him Thurman. He married Velma Neal in Quemado, Texas on 8 JUN 1940, and they had two children; Mary Wan and Paul Eugene. He was Police Chief of Spur, Texas 62-64. He worked on the Beggs Ranch 68-76. He was Sheriff of Dickens, Texas 77-80. He was a Police officer in Knox City. He was Deputy Sheriff in Holiday, Texas. He was a part time rancher, and loved and raised horses in Dickens. He lived his last few years in Assisted Care.
