The death is announced of Mr. Arthur Edward Halloran, late Sheriff of Queensland, which took place on the 24th instant, at the Grange, East Caulfield, Melbourne. Mr Halloran, who was well advanced in years, not very long ago went to Melbourne for the benefit of his health. While there he was taken seriously ill, and although hopes were entertained that he would be able to return to Brisbane, farther complications supervened, and he succombed. From Pugh's "Men of the Time" we learn that Mr. A. E. Halloran, Sheriff of Queensland, was born in Suffolk, England, August 14 1816, and was educated in Sydney, New South Wales. In October 1823, Mr. Halloran arrived in Sydney and in Wide Bay in August 1853 he entered the public service of New South Wales in December, 1834, as clerk in the Roads Branch of the Survey Department, and remained there until March 1836, when he was transferred to Port Macquarie as Clerk of Petty Sessions. In August 1863, he received the appointment of Commissioner for Crown Lands for the Wide Bay District. In the following year the Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Burnett District (the late Sir Maurice O'Connell) was transferred to Port Curtis, and Mr. Halloran was appointed Commissioner for the Districts of Wide Bay and Burnett, and police magistrate, having to attend the benches of Maryborough, Gayndah and Nanango. In January 1860, he was appointed police magistrate for Warwick, having the Leyburn branch to attend to also and a few months later he was appointed gold commissioner for the district. Mr. Halloran remained in these positions until February 1864, when he was appointed sheriff of the colony and held that position till July 11, 1888,
when he was succeeded by the present occupant of the office, Captain Townley.
Baring his employment in the Civil Service Mr. Halloran has been returning-officer and filled other honorary appointments.
