Katherina was born in the village of Walddorf, Calw, Wuerttenberg, in the black forest region of Germany. She was the third of four children born to Jakob and Anna Barbara Walz. She and her younger sister (Friedericka Klaverkamp) emigrated to the US together sometime about 1883 according to the US Census. Her mother, Anna Barbara Walz emigrated in 1890 after her father passed away in Walddorf. She met her husband Hermann in Philadelphia.
They married September 12,1885 at St. Michael's German Lutheran Church at Franklin Street below Vine in Philadelphia, PA. and thus made North Philly their home until 1902 at which time they moved to Egg Harbor City, NJ. On September 15,1903 her husband Hermann bought the "Hotel Continental" from Charles Dammann. Six months later he died of a heart attack in the early morning. Her mother passed away three months later. Kate was left to operate the Hotel and raise her children on her own with the youngest less than a year old. A short term marriage followed with Jacob Reutsch. She sold the hotel in 1914 and bought a home on Liverpool Ave.
