Came to Kansas In Year 1880

Mary Elizabeth Watkins, Well Known in Sedgwick County.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Watkins, who died at the home of her son, Charles P. Watkins, in this city, Sunday, at the age of 88 years, was one of Sedgwick County pioneers. She settled at Haysville, south of Wichita, in 1880. Her husband Ambrose Watkins, died in Kentucky 34 years ago.

Mrs. Watkins was a daughter of one of the widely known families in Kentucky. Before the Civil War she and her husband owned 75 slaves. She was born in Russelville in Logan County, March 10, 1826.

Lately Mrs. Watkins had been residing at 426 Riverview at the home of one of her daughters, Mrs. H.H. Harris. She was the mother of eleven children. She had 25 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. The seven living children, in addition to the two mentioned above are: Mrs. S. Rutherford, Chickasha, OK.; Ambrose Watkins, Haysville; Henry Watkins, Udall; Crittendon Watkins, Indiana; Robert Watkins, Oklahoma City.
