A.J. Wilcox, Pioneer Hamilton Countian, Rests in Cottage Hill Cemetery; Last Rites, Monday

Dropping out of the picture of Hamilton County public for the past several years, A. J. Wilcox, who came to this section from Falls and Hill counties when Hamilton was on the Texas frontier, had in no wise been forgotten by many long-time friends. Memories of him were revived and his history as a citizen of prominence was reviewed when news came from Frederick, Oklahoma, on July 24, that he had answered the summons to go Home at the age of 93 years and six months.

The body of Mr. Wilcox was received at the Williams & Riley Funeral Home on Hamilton and rested there until the funeral hour, four o’clock on Monday afternoon. The impressive memorial service in his honor, conducted by Rev. John D. West, was held in the Cottage Hill Baptist Church, where he had been a member of the congregation for, faithful and devout in life for many years. Following the religious service, Masons assumed charge of the ceremonies of the commitment. He rests beside his wife, who departed this life on December 20, 1936.

The grave mounds were covered with masses of beautiful flowers, tributes of love and respect for the man, honorable and true, who sleeps peacefully, awaiting the glad Resurrection Morn.
Andrew Jackson Wilcox was born in San Jacinto County, January 25, 1850. In the glory and strength of young manhood he was married in 1868* to Miss Sarah Jane Drake. They were the parents of twelve children, eight of whom survive the father and mother and are honoring the names of their good parents in lives that are useful and high in character. They are Mrs. G. N. Connell, McLean, Texas; Mrs. T. A. Hale and A. J. Wilcox, Jr., Hamilton; A. P. Wilcox, Frederick, Oklahoma; J. W. Wilcox, Mantiou, Oklahoma; Richard Wilcox, Clifton, Texas; J. E. Wilcox, Houston, Texas; and T. A. Wilcox, Snider Oklahoma. His descendants include a great number of grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

A.J. Wilcox had been a member of the Masonic Lodge for sixty years, and, as mentioned above, a member of the Missionary Baptist Church since early manhood. In citizen service he was county commissioner of Hamilton County for six years, and was, at the time of his death, the only surviving member of the county court of his day.

The memory of Mr. Wilcox lives on to bless the generations to come.
