Katie Antonia Key, a lifelong member of the Wayne community, went home to be with her Lord on July 16, 2019. Born on January 30, 1926, Katie grew up in a loving home with her parents, Clara and Francis Chassot. Along with her siblings, Gretchen, Carl, Bernard, Francis, and Nettie, there was never a dull moment.

Katie attended Wayne schools where she met her partner in life, Howard Key. They were married December 25, 1947 and made their home in Wayne. Katie and Howard made quite the team building a life of farming, ranching, and family. The couple was blessed with three children, Bruce, Marcia, and Alicia. In 1980 they were honored as the McClain County Farm Family of the year. For Katie, her home was her castle and working there brought her great joy. From her garden, she canned and froze vegetables to last the family until the next season. Using this store, she always had a tasty meal and, more often than not, a delicious pie ready for the dinner table. Katie was an avid gardener growing beautiful flowers. For many years during the Fall, people would drive to the Key home to see her enormous bed of blooming chrysanthemums. Fortunately, she was able to continue gardening until a few years ago. Katie was a great seamstress keeping her two girls well dressed and continued sewing for her two granddaughters.

During Katie’s later years, she acquired a kitten by chance. Cleo, the cat, became her favorite “child”. Everyone else took a backseat. Katie was a member of the Wayne First Baptist Church, and taught Sunday School for many years. She was blessed to be a part of a nurturing, caring, and loving church family and Sunday school class. Katie lived her life on her terms, the way she wanted, and with her complete faith in her Lord and Savior.
