TRIBUTE TO THE MEMORY OF BROTHER M.S. PADEN

Brother M.S. Paden was born in Spartanburg, District S.C. on January 1st, 1826, and died December 27th, 1917.

He had been a citizen of this (Cherokee County) for seventy-two years, and one among the early settlers.

He helped to lay the foundation of civilization in this division of the State.

Mr. Paden was a man of great literary attainments and was public spirited, also took great interest in the politics of the country, in helping to frame the platform and voice the policies of our local government.

He was an enterprising and progressive citizen, and contributed largely to the making of Woodstock.

Mr. Paden was a plain-spoken man and his influence was ever found on the side which made for the best interest of the community.

He united with the Missionary Baptist Church in the early forties then known as Enon Church, now Woodstock.

Brother Paden was one of the organizers of the Noonday Association which was organized at Old Enon Church fifty nine years ago.

He was a deacon of the church and was a meek, gentle and efficient officer of the church and his life was in every way worthy of emulation.

The last few years of his life were inactive by reason of infirmity and age.

Mr Paden was mentally strong almost to the last, he was a man who lived and died in the Christian Faith, and when the waters of the Jordan were splashing at his feet, he looked death square in the face without a shudder and frequently expressed himself as being ready and willing to go, and was anxious to touch the banks of deliverance.

In the death of Brother Paden the town has lost the oldest and one among the most honored and consecrated men, the County one of her most vigilant citizens, and the church one of her most devout and faithful members.

He was laid to rest at the old Enon Cemetery, funeral services conducted by pastor of the church, Rev. W.E. Fuller, of Newnan, Ga.

We bow in humble submission to God who doeth all things well.

Mr. M.S. Paden one of the most prominent and beloved citizens of Woodstock passed away, Dec. 27th, at his home here. Had he lived until Jan 4th he would have been 93 years old.

He was one of the pioneers of Woodstock, having moved here in early days and was a deacon of Woodstock Baptist Church for over fifty years, and took an active part in organizing Noonday Association many, many years ago.

He was also a member of the Masonic fraternity in high standing, and he will be sadly missed by his church and community as he numbered his friends by the score.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church conducted by his pastor, Rev. Fuller.

He is survived by his wife and three children, Mr. J.M. Paden, of Woodstock, Mr. W.L. Paden, of Atlanta and Mrs. Alice Parsonage, of South Carolina.

Mark Simpson Paden is listed on the Confederate Graves Registry as I D. # 110803, buried in Enon Cemetery. They give his date of birth and state there is NO unit marker on his grave. But they quote Cemeteries of Cherokee County records , "History of Cherokee County" and Roster of Ga Soldiers as sources, saying he was a 1st LT. in Company B of the 43 GA vols and served from 1861-1865. No pension records were listed in the GA Archives (but their records may not be complete.)
