CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Robert W. Rackstraw, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed Hostile force while serving with the 11th General Support Aviation Company, 11th Aviation Group (Airmobile), 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Rackstraw distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 17 April 1970, in the Republic of Vietnam. When the base came under an intense mortar barrage and ground attack, evacuation of the wounded personnel was urgently needed. Realizing the importance of getting the injured men to medical facilities and despite the intensity of the enemy attack, Warrant Officer Rackstraw skillfully maneuvered his helicopter into the base and quickly completed the vital mission. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer (CWO-2) Robert W. Rackstraw, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Chief Warrant Officer Rackstraw distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 1 June 1970, in the Republic of Vietnam. Called upon to pick up the brigade commander, Chief Warrant Officer Rackstraw immediately flew to the fire base. Upon arriving in the area, the base was receiving heavy enemy mortar and rocket fire. Despite the apparent danger and realizing the importance of the commander's safety, he carefully guided his aircraft into the base and safely lifted the general from the area. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
