OJ Johnston, age 81, of Alexander; died December 12, 2007 after a brave and lengthy battle with cancer. He was born October 31, 1926 in Rixey, Arkansas to Perry and Verner Johnston.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gerald C. Johnston and William P. (Dub) Johnston and three sisters, Cleo Shahan, Dixie Clawitter and Mary Ann Pack.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Jean Townsend Johnston; brother, Edgar (Nita) Johnston; several nieces, nephews and extended family, Bill and Sherry Henson, Emily and Abby Henson, Jessica and Jonathon Halligan.

OJ was a W.W. II Veteran of the U.S. Naval 8th Amphibious Landing Craft Infantry Group, having his 18th Birthday in Italy. He also served in North Africa, Southern France and several areas in the Mediterranean. He retired as a civil service employee for the U.S.P. and F.O. at Camp Robinson and retired as a master Sergeant in the Arkansas National Guard.

He was a charter member of Green Memorial Baptist Church where he was ordained as a deacon. He served as chairman of the deacons, Sunday School Teacher and youth worker. He presently was a member of New Life Baptist Church where he served as trustee. OJ was a 32 Degree Mason, member of Mary Williams #307 and member of Scottish Rite Freemasonry.

OJ loved gardening and sharing vegetables with friends and never turned down a request for help. He was a very unique and caring man. He was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him.

Pallbearers will be Bill Henson, Ronnie Hutchison, Jonathon Halligan, Daren Campbell, Mark Griffin and Jim Carlisle. Honorary pallbearers will be Clifford Wilhelm, Jim Barber, Norman Brown and Merrill Jamison.

Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday December 14, 2007 at Ashby Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday December 15, 2007 at New Life Baptist Church with burial at Forest Hills Cemetery. Rev. Mike Overton and Rev. David Mason will be officiating.
