Youngest son of Augustus Edward Monnett and Anna Dorothy Walton Monnett. He was raised on his father's farm until he and his older brother Irvine Monnett decided to head west. He spent most of his adult life as a rancher, and was respected for his skills, his word and his fidelity to his friends. Married to Estelle Trent, they were parents to Rosemarie Monnett. After spending many years in Gillette, Wyoming, Walter and Estelle decided to retire to Hawaii. Rosemarie and her family soon followed. Walter's saddle and rope, along with other memorabilia are on display at the museum in Gillette where he is fondly remembered.
