Irv was an only child. He graduated from Muhlenberg High School in 1957, from Ursinus College in 1961, and from Lancaster Theological Seminary in 1965. He was married at the Seminary in 1963. He and his wife raised two daughters. He served as a minister at several churches in Pennsylvania, including Egypt United Church of Christ, Saint John's United Church of Christ in Coopersburg, Flicksville United Church of Christ, Saint John's United Church of Christ in Fogelsville, and Saint John's United Church of Christ in Palmerton.
