Johanna Lee Shoopman Anderson died Friday, May 4, 2012, at her home in Atlanta, Georgia, with close friends and family at her side. Johanna was born at Somerset General Hospital in Somerset, Kentucky on September 3, 1938 to Robert Lee Shoopman, Jr. and Noy Lee Wild Shoopman; her parents preceded her in death.

Johanna was also preceded in death by cousins James Lee Rue Wesley, Margaret Mae Wesley Jasper, and Edward Thomas Bugg, as well as her stepfather, Walter B. Singleton.

Johanna is survived by her sister Sue Ann Shoopman Losey of Somerset; her stepmother Lillian Floyd Shoopman Brown (Rex) of Bushnell, Florida; her stepsister Lana Sears Clinton (spouse Norman, son Samuel Alan Clinton, and daughter Heather Anne Clinton) of LeHigh, Florida; her half sister Bobbie Lynn Shoopman Hahn (spouse Tony, daughter Allison Michelle Hahn Sobieck) of Somerset; and Walter Singleton's sister Wilma Singleton Tucker, Somerset, and daughters Darla Singleton Shell (Bill), Lexington, Kentucky, and Janet Singleton Knight (Mike), Akron, Ohio.

Treasured cousins and their families also survive: Genevieve Livesay Wesley (widow of cousin Rue Wesley), Somerset; Elizabeth Anne "Shan" Wesley Bacon, Nashville, Tennessee; Raymond Jason Wesley (Lisa Nealy Wesley), Gallatin, Tennessee; Ralph Edwards Wesley (Julia Arterberry Wesley), Nashville, Tennessee; Robert Ray Wild, Woodhaven , Michigan; Teddy "Ted" Eugene Wild (Beverly Malak Wild), Riverview , Michigan; Jane Wild Friedman (Harris), Lexington, Kentucky; George Leo "Lee" Wild , Jr.(Jennifer "Jenna" Will Wild), Salvisa, Kentucky; Bertram Henry Shoopman, Jr. (Dixie Williams Shoopman), Rockport, Texas; Eleanor Rose Phillips Kidd, Loveland, Ohio; Virginia Lee Phillips Phillippi Lexington, Kentucky; Rosa Gay Bugg Davidson, Somerset, Kentucky.

Johanna's former husband, Farris Furman Anderson, III, Bainbridge Island, Washington, and her mother-in-law and dear friend, Suezelle Bergren Anderson, Atlanta, Georgia , also survive.

Devoted friends and family cared for Johanna during her brief illness with pancreatic cancer: Atlanta friends Lois Ricci, Donna Cole, and Jennifer Dickerson, and especially her friend of forty years, George Hubert "Hugh" Stout of Gig Harbor, Washington. Many other friends from over the years were in touch to express their love and encouragement.

Johanna graduated from Somerset High School in 1956, from Berea College in 1961 (Biology), from the University of Wisconsin in 1963 (Bacteriology), and from Emory University in 1999 (Public Health Administration). Johanna's career included virology and genetics research (University of Wisconsin, Madison); genetics, oral biology, and vascular research (University of Washington, Seattle); hematology research (University of Washington, Seattle; Scripps Research Foundation, San Diego); and hematology/oncology research (Emory University, Atlanta); as well as Program Specialist at the Emory University Wesley Woods Center for Health in Aging in Atlanta.

Johanna lived her life with curiosity, compassion, and courage--accompanied by an adventurous spirit. Through infantile paralysis "polio" at an early age, six years traveling on a 30 foot sail boat in the Pacific, a career in medical research, extensive world and local travels, Chef's school and work in Sydney, Australia, and particularly challenging medical issues in recent months, Johanna pursued a spirited and caring life for herself and others maintaining relationships with family, school and work friends, and personal acquaintances over the years and throughout the world.

In memory of Johanna, the family suggests contributions to Berea College (CPO 2216, Berea, Kentucky 40404), or Hospice of Lake Cumberland (100 Parkway Drive, Somerset, Kentucky 42503).
