John was the son of James Knight Birkhead
and Troy Belle Kendrick. His mother Troy Belle died May 19, 1917 shortly after he had turned 3 years old. His father Jim then married Rhoda Sheldon Collvins Dec 23, 1917. Seven years later Sept 14, 1924 his father died. John was just a couple of months from his eleventh birthday. A lot of tragedy for one so young, even though my Aunt Rhoda loved her stepchildren very much. He had one sister Rachael, one half brother Jack, and two half sisters, Elaine and Mary Frances.
John married Mildred Elizabeth Roberts January 4, 1941. They were the parents of two boys and two girls. Beverly Ann was born premature and lived only one day.
John died in Angelina County, Texas, February 26, 1976 from lung cancer. He was laid to rest the in the Avery Cemetery in Red River County, Texas near where he was born.
