Caroline Catherine Gross was born in 1842 in Wittenberg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, her father, Johann Gottlieb Gross, was 28, and her mother, Barbara Graf, was 25. She was the eldest child in a family of nine. Caroline was the sister of Johann Gottlib Gross (1849-1924). She had one son with Christian Mugler in 1866. Caroline died on July 3, 1894, in Oxford, New Jersey, at the age of 52, and was buried in Belvidere, New Jersey in the Gross Family plot.
