He attended Clay City High School and Indiana State University. James married the love of his life, Rosalie J. Schauwecker on May 24, 1947. James was a manufacturing foreman with the former General Housewares in Terre Haute. He was a member of First United Church of Christ in Clay City and Masonic Lodge FA&M 562. James enjoyed square dancing with his wife, tinkering with his antique tractors in his shop and traveling with Rosalie to their winter home in Apache Junction, Arizona.
James was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Rosallie Bess, who passed away in 2016; and a brother, Willard Bess.
Survivors include his son, David Bess and his wife, Chris; two sisters, Opal Atkisson and Glenda Enderson; grandchildren, Christina Vargas and husband, Roberto, Leah and Emily Bess; great-grandchildren, Sebastian and Eliza Rose Vargas; a nephew, Larry Edmondson; and a niece, Linda Wynn.
Services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 7, 2019 in First United Church of Christ, 6414 County Road 1550, Clay City with Pastor Don Yegerlehner officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
