Alex George Melcher, 83, of Udall, Kansas, passed away Wednesday morning, August 7, 2019 at the Kansas Medical Center in Andover.
Born June 10, 1936 in Viola, Kansas, he was the son of Paul and Hilda (Rausch) Melcher. His family moved to Mulvane when Alex was one. At the age of five, they moved to Udall where Alex received his early education. The family moved back to Mulvane and he attended Mulvane High School.
Alex began working as a young man in Mulvane for Joe Riveria, in construction. At the age of 18, he became a carpenter with his brother, Ben. He was united in marriage to Jerry Ann Oakes on February 15, 1958 at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Mulvane. The couple made their home in Udall. Alex joined the United States Army in 1959 and served in Germany during Peacetime as an Artilleryman. He received his honorable discharge in 1961.
In 1966, Alex began his own construction business in Udall, Melcher Construction Company. He built many homes throughout Cowley, Sumner, Butler, and Sedgwick Counties. He worked for over 15 years on a subdivision in Derby, and in 1992, built Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Jerry preceded him in death on April 6, 2003.
Alex married Una Vey Stout on February 14, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Udall. The couple made their home in Udall and Alex continued building homes until retiring in 2011. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Udall and served many years on the Udall Fire Department.
His family includes his wife Una Vey Melcher of Udall; his son Michael Melcher and wife, Gennifer of Udall; his daughters, Teresa Kistler and husband, Jack of Udall; Shirley Ann Hampton of Udall; his sister Pauline Williams of Wichita; his grandchildren, Greg Melcher and wife, Silvia of El Paso, TX; Ian Wilkerson and wife, Ashley of Belle Plaine; Guin Morton and husband, Ryan of Wichita; Jamie Wilkerson of Belle Plaine; Tami Molloy and husband, Jeremy of Derby; Amanda Rardin and husband, Nathan of Rose Hill; his great grandchildren, Jackie, Alexa, Cole, Raylee, Sofia, Elijah, Jaxton, Ariahna, and Ezra.
In addition to his parents and first wife, Jerry, Alex was preceded in death by his brothers, Lawrence and Ben Melcher and sisters, Bernita Cole and Marie Elizabeth Cox.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. at the Udall High School Auditorium. Interment will follow at the Udall Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield on Friday, August 9 from 5 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 5 to 7 that evening.
A memorial has been established in Alex’s name for the Udall Fire Department. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
