My uncle lived fast, thought fast, talked fast, put action behind those words, lived life to it's fullest and had more incarnations in his 61 yr life span than most
have in 500 years! He was a true hustler--always knowing how to make a buck and build it into more!
He did this both by legitimate means (from his 30's on!) and illegitimate means (his teens to his 30's!).
As a young man he was always into everything, drove the sharpest cars, wore the cleanest threads, had the biggest house, knew all the latest trends before everybody else, had freinds from every walk of life, because he had that Gemini charm and gift of gab that could get him anywhere and everywhere he wanted to go! He also did some stints in prison for various things. But he was a solider and took the experience and made a change in his life by his 30's, becoming the sucessful owner of a beauty shop and boutique called "Directions" in Columbia, SC, which ran from
1979-2004. "Directions" was like a New York-style salon in the middle of South Carolina where something interesting
was always going down! You might see celebrities there, sports figures, politicians, whomever was in Columbia on some business!--They'd always stop by "Directions" to get
their do's done, have a manicure/facial/pedicure,
have a sip of fine wine, some hors d'ouerves,
and some sparkling & lively conversation!
It was a place that was both high-class and colloquial
all at the same time!
He had 6 children all together, Pete Jr.
(called "Anky")(b. 1962), the late
Mark Anthony-Gerard Davis (b. 1965-d.2004),
Veronica (b.1966), Lisa (b. 1968), Omar (b.1972)
and Ashley (b.1980). Though he loved all of his children dearly and cherished them, it was my cousin Mark who was most like him in every way and the two had a close bond.
When Mark died suddenly in a hit and run car accident in October of 2004, my uncle was overcome with greif and
this marked the beginning of the end for him.
A once very resilient and robust man, his health
steadily declined in the following years--
diabetes, nervous ailments, and finally
pancreatic cancer, which took his life
on July 1st 2007 at 6am with his surviving children
and girlfreind Rosa by his side.
I was blessed to have went down to see him earlier this year on my 43rd birthday while he was still coherent to pay my respects and to let him know how much I loved him, even though sometimes we didn't see things eye to eye--but I did love him and appreciated what he represented!
He was strong, proud, free, self-possesed, self-made, black /cherokee, stylish, good-looking, high-living,
fast moving and fast-talking!
He was and forever will always be--my UNCLE PETE!!
I raise a toast up to heaven in your honor!
Love, Reesy
