The son of Joseph Samuel Pate, Sr. and Mary Amelia Murrow Pate Downs, William James Pate was born in 1842 in Bryan County, Georgia. He had one full sibling, an older sister, and seven half-siblings. His father and his father's second wife left Georgia for Texas. William and his sister, Edna Josephine Pate Downs, were largely raised by his maternal grandparents, Rev. John Murrow and Mary Amelia Louisa Badger Murrow. His stepfather was Isaiah Benjamin Downs.

During the Civil War William was a private in Company A (the “Bryan Independent Riflemen”) of the Georgia 25th Infantry of the Confederacy organized in Savannah, Georgia. He enlisted on August 14, 1861. The unit was reorganized several times. William’ unit fought with the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Atlanta. He was captured at Murfreesboro, Tennessee on December 7, 1864 and was released from Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio on June 12, 1865. Living conditions at Camp Chase prison camp were harsh. While Union authorities never intentionally starved the prisoners, the primary goal of Northern officials was to feed and equip the men serving in their own army. This commonly resulted in shortages for the prisoners. The large number of men in close quarters also led to outbreaks of disease. Over 2,000 Confederate prisoners died there.

On June 10, 1866 in Bryan County, William married Ann Frances Lanier Pate, and they had no children. After her death he married Susannah P. Worley Pate on September 29, 1874 in Bryan County, and they had four children: Raymond Coleman Pate, William Pate, Susan Frances Pate, and Rootha Pate. After her death he married Susan E. Redding Pate, and they had one child, William Melser Pate. William died at age 44 in 1886 in Bryan County. His final resting place is unknown.

William’s ancestry was Irish and English. He is a direct descendant of 18th century artist Joseph Badger.

I hope someone will add William's photo to this site. Where are William. his three wives, and five children buried.
