Ordinary Seaman, United States Navy
The son of Nathaniel and Rebecca (Doten) King of Plymouth, MA.
Walter was an 18-year-old Plymouth Painter when he enlisted at Boston on Aug. 22, 1861 and was mustered that same day as a 1st Class Boy in the United States Navy. The 1st Class Boy, the highest of the "Boy" classifications in a three-tier system, indicated seaman 18 years of age or younger who had shown proficiency as a seaman. Walter was subsequently promoted to Ordinary Seaman on an unknown date, but probably soon after reaching his 18th birthday.
After training on the receiving ship USS Ohio he was assigned to the USS Sabine, which sailed as part of the Atlantic Blockading Squadron. During his time of service, the Sabine rescued marines and the crew from the distressed troop transport Governor and was part of the then unsuccessful effort to seek out and destroy the Confederate raiders Alabama and Tacony.
Walter, who was discharged from the Navy on Sep. 14, 1863, relocated to Lawrence, MA following his military service and was employed as a machinist, most probably in a textile mill or allied shop. He was 21 years, eight months, and 22 days old when he succumbed to Typhoid Fever. Fourteen years after his death a contract was signed on Nov. 2, 1879 for the D.W. Whitney Co. to provide a government issued headstone to mark his grave at Bellevue Cemetery.
