Shirley Ann Rutherford, age 82, of Wamego, passed away Saturday August 10, 2019 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan. She had been hospitalized continually for about five months in a series of medical facilities, eventually succumbing to the effects of a stroke on August 9, 2019.

Shirley was born on May 8, 1937 in Hutchinson, Kansas to Helen and Alfred German, she was the oldest of three children. She attended Hutchinson Public Schools, graduating from Hutchinson High School with the class of 1955.

On May 27, 1956, she married Sheldon Rutherford of Little River, Kansas at Hutchinson. The couple and their two children moved to Manhattan on January 1, 1968.

Shirley became the office manager at the St. Mary’s Hospital. Later she had the pleasure of working for Henry Otto I, then Harry Otto (Henry II), then joining Henry Otto III, in being part owner and operator of Otto and Rutherford Insurance Company, which later became the Rutherford Insurance Company.

Shirley was a Cub Scout Den Mother for a group of enthusiastic boys when she was a young mother. She was a member of the O.E.S. She was active in the local chapters of ABWA, and Soropotimist International, and she proudly held various offices over the years.

After moving to rural Wamego in 1992, Shirley was honored to serve on the St. George Township Fire Department Board of Directors.

She enjoyed knitting and other types of handiwork, which she learned at her mother and grandmothers knees at an early age. Arthritis took this pleasure from her many years ago. Her passions were cooking for her family and oil painting on canvas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Quinton of Utah.

In addition to her husband, Sheldon, of the home, she is survived by her daughter, Barbara “Barbie” and her son Scott, both of Wamego; and also her sister, Barbara (Bobbie) of California, and her sister-in-law, Bonnie German, of Utah.
