Carl W. "Ande" Anderson, who would have celebrated his 97th birthday today, Aug. 27, passed peacefully Aug. 10, 2019, at home with his family close by.

He was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1922, the beloved son of the late Carl H. and Mildred (Romkey) Anderson. He married his wife, the late Diana LaFrancois, of Northbridge, Massachusetts, June 29, 1946. He was a proud U.S. veteran and lifetime member of the American Legion, Buck-Dubiel Post No. 101, of Somers, Connecticut. He served during World War II in the Army Air Corps at numerous airfields as a flight engineer/mechanic on various aircraft, including the B-17, B-25, and B-29. He also held a private pilot license. He had a lifelong love of all things aeronautical that lead to a 30-plus year career in Experimental Test at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford before retiring in 1980.

Carl was a major do-it yourselfer: he would tackle any job, big or small, and as an avid car enthusiast, he loved working on his vehicles, doing it well into his 90s. He also enjoyed the family pets. He was a dedicated family man and he loved to drive around the United States and take an occasional cruise. Some of his favorite places were visiting Smithsonian Museum, the Space Center, one of his old Military Stations or the Epcot Center/Disney. Many times just getting in the car and going there by himself just to relax on the beach and get away.

He is survived by his sister, Shirley Cariglio of Richmond, California; as well as children, Jacqueline MacDonald (James), Eric Anderson (Barbara), Robert Anderson (Christine), Colin Anderson (Deborah), Cheryl Anderson, Craig Anderson (Barbara), Diana Anderson, and Scott Anderson (Lois). He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Diana; brother-in-law, Don Cariglio; longtime friend, Doris King; and two children, Carl F. Anderson and Patricia Cramer.

In addition, he leaves 15 grandchildren, Robert Anderson (Kimberlee), Sean Anderson (Karen), Brian Anderson, Jennifer Lyons (Sean), George Cramer (Melanie), Robert Cwikla, Michael Anderson (Jessica), Amy Anderson, Richard Cwikla, Kristine Miller (Tom), Katie Locatelli (Christopher), Justin Anderson, Ryan Anderson (Justine), Katelynn Cramer, Sara Banach; and 16 great-grandchildren.

The memorial calling hours will be Friday, Sept. 13, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Leete-Stevens Funeral Home on South Road in Enfield. It will be followed by military funeral honors and a burial at 2 p.m. at the Agawam Veterans Cemetery on Main Street (Route 159), Agawam, Massachusetts.

There will be a celebration of his life at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at Sunrise Park, 2075 Mountain Road, Suffield, for family and invited guests.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation in his memory to Honor Guard Firing Detail c/o MA Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main St., Agawam, MA 01001, or to a charity of one's choice.
