James was in a member of the 5th WVa Volunteer Infantry. He was called up in 1863 after WVa became a state.

James was married to Elizabeth Jane Rowe on June 5, 1859 in Lawrence county. Their three children were Delilah Jane (1859-1941), Tabitha (1861-1941), and James Madison (1864-1939).

Jane married Nathan Jenkins Jr in 1870 and they had about 8 kids in addition to the three she already had.
