Virgil Richard Matthews was born on January 7, 1929 in Edna, Texas. Finding the love of his life, Wanda Sauls, they married in her parents living room in 1948. He began wedded life as a U.S. Marine P.F.C. and served 1 1/2 years in Guam. In 1968, he opened a family business, Virgil Matthews and Sons Sheet Metal. There he worked tirelessly until his departure in 2004, leaving the company in the hands of his sons. Upon retirement, he and Wanda moved to Willis, Texas to enjoy much deserved time for his love as an avid fisherman and hunter, which he did often with relatives and friends for many years.
At Hillcrest Baptist Church, he was ordained as a Deacon, serving there for many years, as well as First Baptist Church Huffman. Service in the church consisted of teaching adult and junior high boys Sunday School, V. B. S. leader, R. A. leader, treasurer, and several committees. Virgil was active in the community.
He and Wanda were married 65 years, and had 6 children, 21 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren with more on the way.
