Betty June Madison passed away peacefully surrounded by her family July 30 at Cottage in the Meadow in Yakima. Betty was born April 17, 1926, in Longview, WA. Preceding her in death were her parents Dollie and John Henry Nollsch, a sister Francis Moore and husband Harold Madison. Our mom was born and raised in Longview by parents who came there in the early 1920s from Kansas to be part of a new and growing city. She married our dad Harold Madison in 1943 and raised their three children in a home on Oak Street in the Columbia Valley Gardens area of Longview. Mom and dad lived in this home for 64 years until our dad’s death in 2013 after celebrating 70 years of marriage. Mom then moved to Spokane to live with her daugther and son-in-law until 2018, when she moved to Yakima to live with her son and daughter-in-law. Through those six years of her life, she adjusted to each new place without ever hearing one complaint from her. Mom’s life in Longview was one of pure joy, raising her family and tending to large gardens, which included marionberries, blueberries and apple trees. Her family and friends were the recipients of her wonderful pies, jams and applesauce, all cultivated and prepared lovingly by her hands. She attended Valley Baptist Church in Longview for many years and gained many friendships there. With her family, friends and neighbors, whenever there was a need, she was always there to meet it.
Betty is survived by her three children, Dianna (Jim) Rowton, of Deer Park, Michael (Susan) Madison, of Yakima, and James (Nancy) Madison, of Olympia; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to acknowledge Betty and Harold’s longtime next-door neighbor, David Larsen, for being like a son to our parents, always helping and looking out for them, since their children lived in different locations in Washington. Also, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of Cottage in the Meadow Hospice for their loving care of our mother.
Viewing will be from noon to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, and from 9-11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, at Columbia Funeral Service in Longview. A graveside service under the direction of Columbia Funeral Service honoring Betty is planned for Friday, Aug. 16, at 1 p.m. at Hudson Cemetery in Rainier, OR, with Pastor Phil Peters officiating. Memorial contributions in honor of Betty may be made to Cottage in the Meadow Hospice, 1208 S 48th Ave., Yakima, WA 98908.
