There was considerable friction between certain elements of Southern
and Federal, among the survivors just before and after the Civil War;
wounded men and some not wounded had returned. Amongst the ex-Confederates
was James Hanks, who had lost a leg and had been wounded through
the body from which he never recovered. He had a brother, Dick, also an
ex-Confederate, who had also returned. On one occasion Jim was at the
Williams’ tavern, about three miles south of town, when a quarrel occurred
between him and some home guardsmen in which he got the worst of it.
Dick, who was some distance away at the time, when he was told of the
trouble, put spurs to his horse, rode to the Williams tavern, and without a
word, shot and killed Green Caldwell. In the excitement Bone Cardwell
got away, riding south along the pike. Thinking he might be pursued, he
left his horse and crawled into a culvert under the pike. He was pursued
by Hanks, who passed on, hunting him, when he crawled out and made his
way back to town.
